Game 2009.027: Tigers at White Sox Redux

PREGAME: Let’s try this one again. Both teams pushed their pitchers back a day meaning Zach Miner gets skipped and Armando Galarraga gets the ball for Detroit. The Tigers will miss Jose Contreras and get Mark Buehrle. Everything I wrote yesterday still applies so just look there.

Detroit vs. Chi White Sox – May 7, 2009 | MLB.com: Gameday

POSTGAME: Mark Buehrle was really really good. The 6 perfect innings to start the game should have been a clue. But in most of these type games there is a great defensive play or an at ’em ball or two. Not so much in this one. Just a parade of weak ground outs only interrupted by the occaisonal pop-out. Working a 3 ball count or a 15 pitch inning were reasons to celebrate.

With that in mind, the fact that Armando Galarraga was the latest Tigers pitcher to experience a big inning became largely irrelevant. It started with a questionable 4 pitch walk and got worse from there. Galarraga got two outs but then walked Jim Thome after getting aheadd. Jermaine Dye ripped a single. Paul Konerko doubled on a nice pitch off the plate, and AJ killed a hanging slider and that was the ballgame.

  1. And the run comes around to score. I hope Gameday updates it as Chris Guccione getting credit for the RBI. Good lord.

  2. Bad umpiring, dumb walk to Thome, accidental double, and a hanging breaking ball. Ugh.

  3. Gallaraga refuses to throw anything up in the zone. Until he learns to elevate some fastballs and change the eye level of the hitters, he’s gonna have a very long season.

    1. I don’t agree. He’s been very successful when he keeps all his pitches low in the zone. Problem today his control wasn’t there in the 1st. He also hung a few sliders belt high. He needs to keep those pitches at the knees.

  4. I have the Sox broadcast on MLB EI tonight and they have been very complimentary of Inge. Said he could play every position including “giving you a inning or two of pitching”

Well heres to a lot of hits, runs and a win against the Sox. This is killing me that we are 5 down right from the start.

  5. buerhle is getting a no-hitter today…consider that my prediction and my best attempt to jinx him

  6. This is really a bummer and I have the Sox broadcast……….. I’m dying here !!!!

  7. Buehrle is looking so good right now a 15 pitch inning is almost a moral victory.

  8. Lloyd tried to encourage Magglio by reminding him he hit .163 in April the year he won the batting title. But. Um. He hit .344 that April. Sorry, Lloyd.

  9. I think its pretty awesome, even if it is against the Tigers. Only 17 perfect games in MLB history.

  10. i remember some one on here yesterday wrote that an off day, then a rain out is one of the worst things….i think i can safely say this is worst

  11. no i dont mean that as a criticism, im hoping that our idiot team can get a damn hit

  12. Man big innings have just killed us lately in 6 of our last 8 games the Tigers have had one inning where they gave up 4 or more runs. Hopefully we can get that trend to stop soon.

  13. I think we had our bags packed and we were headed to Cleveland before the game started.

  14. Is anyone else getting concerned with the regularity that our pitchers are giving up big innings? They just have a tendency of knocking us out of the game pretty quickly. And what is going on with Maggs? He is struggling. It is definitely time for Raburn to go home, he is just awful…

  15. Maggs, Guillen, and Polanco may have all lied on their birth certificates. Seriously. While Ibanez (American born) is blossoming in Philly at age 38 these guys all look like they are 5 years older than they claim. I hope I am wrong but 35 is rarely an age to completely lose it all.
