Bad news for one reliever, good news for another?

The Tigers announced that they have outrighted the contract of Macay McBride to Toledo. McBride is still trying to get health after Tommy John surgery last year and doesn’t really figure in the immediate plans. The outrighting does open up a spot on the 40 man roster though. There are three relievers not on the 40 man roster who look to be in contention for a spot on the 25 man roster. Ryan Perry, Casey Fien, and Juan Rincon are all making a favorable impression this spring and would require a 40 man spot. Is this good news for one of the trio? Is it a sign that the Tigers are about to make a trade for a starter to flush out the rotation? Or is it just a clerical move?

  1. Coach Jim…

Hmmm. So you forsee a Larish/Thames platoon in left, or do you see Wilkin Ramirez making his move?

The Tigers have plenty of trade bait, and Guillen seems like a piece they could move. BUT, it sounds much more like the deal that COULD get done rather than the deal the Tigers would like to make. Guillen is a far more complete hitter than anyone in the Larish/Thomas/Clevelen/Ramirez/Thames merry-go-round. He gives the team the best chance to win this year.

I’m just not sure the Tigers NEED another starter. Three of 5 starting spots are locks, and it seems Bonderman wouldn’t be far away even if he’s not ready on Opening Day, so that’s 4… As for the 5 spot, Miner, Porcello or even Lambert would work well. So if the Tigers dealt Guillen, it only makes sense for an above-average starter. Would they unload Robertson in the deal (eating some of his contract?)

  2. I’m inclined to believe they’re opening a spot for one of the relievers, BTW… Any of the 3 would get my vote.
