Joel Zumaya to the DL

Not surprisingly, Joel Zumaya has been placed on the disabled list. His shoulder is the culprit but the diagnosis on the press release was limited to “sore.”

Francis Beltran gets called up to take his spot. Why not Casey Fien or Francisco Cruceta, or someone else? This is probably a 2 day call up until Todd Jones can be activated on Friday. Beltran is fairly expendable whereas Fien would require burning an option and Cruceta could be lost through waivers when he would be sent down.

  1. I thought it didn’t burn an option if the assignment was less than 20 days?

Either way, I wonder if the other consideration is that they’re going to need the 40-man as freed up as possible this offseason if they’re going to protect some pretty valuable players for the Rule 5.

  2. does the name Matt Anderson come to mind when talking about Zumaya….he is probably playing slow pitch softball with his beer drinkin buddies some where in Ohio..They will soon invite Zumaya to join the team.

  3. I think that an option is not used if the assignment is less than 20 days if sent to the minors, but not the reverse.

  4. Beltran has been lights out for the past month. Frankly, I’d rather see him in the pen than Dolsi for the rest of the year. Considering he is still a guy with Tommy John Surgery in his rear view mirror, it might be worth seeing if we’ve got something here.

  5. I’d rather see Lee, Billfer, Matt Wallace, and Eddie in the bullpen over Dolsi, Rodney, Zumaya, and Fossum at this point.
