Game 130: Tigers at Royals

PREGAME: The Tigers and Royals have played 3 series this season. All have been sweeps. So for the sake of consistency, the Tigers should just go ahead and keep things tidy with a sweep today.

They send out Kenny Rogers. Rogers has been decent over his last 3 starts. He’s posted a 4.66 ERA with 14 K’s and 10 walks (egh) in 19.1 innings. The last time he saw the Royals he 4 hit them for 6 innings before rain cut his night short.

The Royals will let Brandon Duckworth make his 2008 debut. Duckworth faced the Tgiers in 2007 and pitched 6.1 innings of shut out baseball.

Game Time 2:10

POSTGAME: Sloptastic. Marcus Thames made a nice diving catch, and while it saved some runs, it couldn’t overcome the runs that he allowed with a couple gaffes.

Magglio Ordonez meanwhile, who is just not comfortable, hit a check swing half pop up to second with no outs and runners at the corners. Instead of, you know running, he stood at home plate and watched it like a golf shot. This allowed the second baseman to let the ball drop, turn the double play, and leave the runner at third standing there.

And Kenny Rogers wasn’t good. He wasn’t helped by Thames, but he also created his own problems with 4 walks and he allowed the number 9 hitter to go 3 for 3 with a walk.

Ugly.

  1. Jeesh quiet around here.. almost an hour into the game. I’ll try not to disturb anyone’s nappy time..heh I take it they won last night. I was watching the replay when I was getting ready for work this morning, I believe it was the bottom of the 8th and the Tigers were ahead 4-0. Looks like the game so far is a bit closer.

  2. I really hope the Tigers do not consider bringing Kenny back next year. He is done.

  3. to Shane (I really hope the Tigers do not consider bringing Kenny back next year. He is done.)

I hope they absolutely bring him back…….as the pitching coach

  4. Boy, looking back at the past couple days it’s been awfully quiet around here. I suppose some folks are out of town (as I just was) or off enjoying the last few days of nice weather.

At any rate, being 11 out doesn’t help matters either.

  5. As Ham Sandwich’s cousin once said, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. Plus, with the sweep avoidance, there’s still a chance for the lousy August I projected.

Yeah, I was out of town, too. Not boycotting the games or the game threads. It’s still Tigers baseball. Lotsa interesting things still to come, playoffs or no.

It pains me to see Thames suck. Good to see Cabrera rock. Good to see Robertson out of the rotation and in the pen.

  6. Sean: Didn’t you know? Gil is going to be out of the league in 2 years. He sucks.

  7. Chris: Yeah, but I want him to continue to suck at his current pace until then. He’s a bum, sure, career AAA tops, but he’s our bum, pending the inevitable DFA as soon as Hessman is ready to take his place.

  8. Hessmania! He’s having an impressive season in Toledo. 32 HR. 66 RBI. Stat lines like that amuse me. I think we’ve covered this ground before.

  9. Today’s Fun Facts:

    Tigers vs. .500+ teams 25-40
    Tigers vs. .500 & below teams 39-26
Tigers vs. AL sub-.500 teams 27-24
    Tigers vs. AL sub-.500 non-Mariners teams 20-21

The Tigers have winning records against only 2 .500+ teams, the Yankees and the Cardinals. On the other hand, the Tigers do have winning records against 2 .500+ teams, the Yankees and the Cardinals.

  10. “I think we’ve covered this ground before.”

Yeah, but not at 3B. If they can’t get Beltre, I want Hessman.

  11. On a serious tip, would you really want Beltre around? I wouldn’t. I mean, he’s OK. Good defender. Some pop. But he really only had that one great season in LA. Other than that he’s been meh. Though maybe getting him out of Seattle would improve his production, as that park seems to kill righty power quite a bit, as evidenced by his home/road splits. He’s allergic to walks, though. I don’t like hitters like that. Anyhoo, he’s still under contract. I wouldn’t trade anything for him considering Guillen has been reasonably decent at 3B anyway.

  12. Maggs display of disrespect to fans should not be tolerated. True Tiger fans have a moral obligation to greet him tonight with a chorus of boos that shakes the buildings.

Sheffield loafing half the time, now Maggs gets in on the act. Not sure I can pay to watch crap like that. Might not renew my season tickets next year. I’d rather players like that lose.

  13. Calm down, killer. It happens. A mental mistake more than anything. Unlike BJ Upton, it didn’t cost his team the game.
