Game 92: Tigers at Twins

PREGAME: Those of you who believe in momentum may have had your beliefs shaken after yesterday’s gut-wrencher. Armando Galarraga faces the one team that he seems to struggle the most with, the Twins. He’s managed to last 6 innings in each of his starts, but his 10:8 K:BB ratio in 18 innings isn’t all that inspiring.

Glenn Perkins takes the mound for the Twins. Perkins has stymied the Tigers twice already this season and has given up no more than 3 runs in any of his last 6 starts.

And I’m going to this game so there will most definitely be a rain delay.

  1. No trend is forever, I think the Tigers take a close, low scoring game tonight. The bullpen will redeem itself, if only for one day.

by Mark in Chicago on Jul 11, 2008 at 4:12 pm

  2. Leyland said shortstop Edgar Renteria, who strained his left hamstring running to first base in Wednesday’s game, should be available to play Friday night. …wonderful news .There is a win right there…in fact why play?
Santiago did more in one game than Renteria did in a month

  3. I’m at the Park bar if anyone wants to buy me a beer.

by billfer on Jul 11, 2008 at 5:54 pm

  4. Mmmm. Beer. You sold me. I must go to the bar now too.

by Chief Monday on Jul 11, 2008 at 6:06 pm

  5. billfer, I hereby buy you a beer. Go ahead and buy it yourself and send me the receipt. I will gladly repay you.

have a blast tonight everyone, I won’t be able to catch the game with you. Go Tig’s!

by Mark in Chicago on Jul 11, 2008 at 6:33 pm

  6. Aren’t beers like 10 bucks a large glass at Comerica? I would def go broke there, cause beer & baseball just seem to go together

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 6:48 pm

  7. billfer

Bring us all home a win tonight.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:07 pm

  8. billfer we need you to drink us thru this one

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:40 pm

  9. Battlestar’s at like 50 pitches through 2.

    No good.

by Adam on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:41 pm

  10. nice pitching to Gomez there ..lets keep him and Motneau off the bases tonight

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:43 pm

  11. GO JOYCE!

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:45 pm

  12. since Mark in Chicago is feeling generous.. let’s put the beer on his tab tonight..lol

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 7:46 pm

  13. Battlestar is battling

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:17 pm

  14. lets see 6 innings of not much yesterday and 6 innings of not much today…..this is exciting

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:36 pm

  15. This is unbelievable. Why is Galarraga still in this game? For that matter, why was he allowed to stay in after the leadoff walk? Leyland & Co. didn’t even have anybody up with Battelstar near 100 pitches to start the 6th and two quick innings in a row by Tigers batters.

And now we’re losing, because Nick Punto is apparently Joe Dimaggio. They can’t get him out, and when they do, he still drives in a run.

by Mark in Chicago on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:43 pm

  16. This pitching change is about 4 batters too late. No fault of Armando’s, this one’s on Jimmuh.

by Mark in Chicago on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:44 pm

  17. unfortunately that one run might be enough seeing that the Tigers are in their 0-1-run mode we have seen often this year.

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:49 pm

  18. How do we make this guy (Perkins) look so good every outing? Unbelievable.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:51 pm

  19. I am sticking to my prediction that the Tigers will win this game. So far I have the low-scoring part right, and Armando pitched well (which is against the trend). Now we just need to rough up Perkins for 2-3 runs…

by Mark in Chicago on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:51 pm

  20. Sheffield, how about waiting on a couple pitches.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:53 pm

  21. Funk one

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:53 pm

  22. Rod acts like they don’t want to pitch to Sheff. I would rather pitch to him than Joyce.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:54 pm

  23. gee I though Sheff had a home run there but it was a ground ball to the pitcher

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:57 pm

  24. I’m glad our number 6 batter has the worst average in the lineup.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:57 pm

  25. He’s got pitching mound or pop up power. Impressive.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:58 pm

  26. funny how careful everyone is with Sheff and he hasn’t done squat in almost a full year…from last aug

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 8:58 pm

  27. Brian you have to admit Sheff has hit some impressive ground balls to the mound this year, Especially when he just throws his bat at that outside pith

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:02 pm

  28. I admit it.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:10 pm

  29. Does Seay ever get a lefty out?? just curious

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:10 pm

  30. Tigers have to come back. Rangers are already beating the sox 5-0 in the third, and still batting.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:11 pm

  31. Make that 6-0.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:13 pm

  32. how come when the Twinks get a runner on third /less two outs they hit those fly balls and score the run…I didn’t eve think that was legal in Comerica Park

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:13 pm

  33. got him on a PUDGE

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:15 pm

  34. I told you pitch to Sheff, not Joyce. Too bad the Twins were smart last inning.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:17 pm

  35. Gotta make that pay.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:18 pm

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:20 pm

  39. bunting ain’t legal in /Comerica either

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:21 pm

  40. gotta do it here//not many chances today

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:22 pm

  41. Is it bad to be happy with a sac. fly because your worried about a DP.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:23 pm

  42. Tigers learned something tonight fly ball scores run how about that

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:23 pm

  43. Some of us just got carried away researching that “beer” topic at the start of the game and are having trouble operating heavy machinery such as keyboards and related gear.

by Coleman on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:24 pm

  44. Thought Kevin was gonna have to put on his rally jersey..but looks like they’re doin alright..so far *fingers crossed*

  45. coleman just keep drinkin!

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:25 pm

  46. Coleman

Screw the beer. I had 1 Boddington, and now I’m on the Cruzan and diet. This team drives me to drinking.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:26 pm

  47. That really sucks.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:28 pm

  48. UGGH!

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:28 pm

  49. If that is a little in the gap the bases are cleared.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:29 pm

  50. a frikin bomb

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:29 pm

  51. How about a come from behind win for us against these turds.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:31 pm

  52. How far did it go? Track in dead center?

by Forty on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:36 pm

  53. Who votes for a pinch hitter for Sheffield in the bottom of the 8th?

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:37 pm

  54. Forty base of the wall

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:37 pm

  55. Vote Me just so it isn’t edgar

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:38 pm

  56. Forty

Gomez is so fast. That is the only reason, I think, it was caught. I thought it was gone off the bat.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:39 pm

  57. judpma

If someone is on base it has to be Larrish. Have you seen his average with runners on base. It would also be funny to see a rookie pinch hit for “the sheff”.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:40 pm

  58. 3-1 was ball four strike three was ball 4

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:44 pm

  59. Sheff

I dare you to prove me wrong.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:45 pm

  60. There’s nothing wrong with taking a walk rather than swinging at ball 4 and ball 5 (Miggy) or swinging at other pitches out of the zone (Thames). They both were trying to hit a game-tying home run. If they get a pitch to drive, fine. if the pitcher is not throwing strikes, take the damned walk.

by Jeff on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:45 pm

  61. has he thrown even one strike this inning…way to swing boys

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:46 pm

  62. Yuck

by Forty on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:49 pm

  63. its even nauseating watching sheff hit because you have such a high expectation that he will do something and yet you know when he is done he didn’t do anything and you knew that would happen,,,,strange

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:49 pm

  64. Rod gave us a pearl of wisdom…He says Rodney needs to throw the ball closer to the plate….thanks Rod

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:53 pm

  65. Sheff is just at the annoying stage right now. He doesn’t do anything at all to warrant getting AB’s right now. I would rather see Joyce, Thomas, or Larrish.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:56 pm

  66. The way Rodney pitched to Kubel is how he used to pitch.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:57 pm

  67. Brian I agree

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:57 pm

  68. I’ve got the rally jersey ready to put on…

by Kevin in Austin on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:57 pm

  69. Hopefully Nathan is as shaky as he was last night.

by Jeff on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:59 pm

  70. Kevin

Hurry up and don that thing. :)

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:59 pm

  71. Put it on now…we need it :)

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 9:59 pm

  72. Without Delmon Young we’d be 0 for v. the Twins.

    Rally Jersey is on…

by Kevin in Austin on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:00 pm

  73. Rodney looked pretty good. Maybe this will help him out a little.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:00 pm

  74. Crooked hat way to go

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:00 pm

  75. I thought he struck out Mauer on the 2-2 pitch inside.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:01 pm

  76. rally time

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:01 pm

  77. Texas up 7-1 on sox.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:01 pm

  78. The Twins own us.

by Tbone on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:05 pm

  79. Bummer..good night all

by Amanda on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:06 pm

  80. I HATE THE twins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:06 pm

  81. Tigers had to work to kill the Rally Jersey. That hurts.

by Kevin in Austin on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:06 pm

  82. well at least they didn’t piss this game away like yesterday ..they just got beat by a better team. This Twin team is solid and plays as a team,,,unlike the .500 Tigers…. The Tigs might catch the Sox but i don’t see them catching the Twinkies

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:07 pm

  83. The Tigers swing at pitches because they might be called strikes. The Twins wait and swing at pitches they think they can drive. In so doing, even when they don’t get many hits, they run up the opposing pitcher’s pitch count. And of course they get a lot of extra baserunners from the walks.

by Jeff on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:10 pm

  84. judpma

That is why this team hovers around .500. Fundamentals aren’t as good. Twins score 2 runs with a sac fly. Tigers did have one tonight, but it seems like every time the Twins get a chance to score at least 1 run they do.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:11 pm

  85. This team is flat brutal. Nice offense against a marginal LH pitcher when they can stack the entire lineup with righties. Need to cancel my XInnings cause this team stinks. Sorry, I am usually an optimist but this is just ugly. The good news is I get to watch it in person next weekend.

by David G. on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:12 pm

  86. Oh well. I’m done for the night. I like Verlander on Sunday. He has been pitching great lately. Tomorrow on FOX is a little scary. Gotta get some runs tomorrow.

by Brian in Tampa on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:13 pm

  87. ya …they do take advantage of what they get…sac..bunt…the have some speed and their bullpen is usually very reliable…they will be tough to catch …I am sticking with my prediction back in April of 81 and 81 if the Tigers can get there….
Tigers are way to inconsistent and they never bother to do the little things,,,lots of wins lately BUT how many losses where the starting pitcher has done a great job…way too many

by judpma on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:17 pm

  88. Hey guys we did it – we made it back to .500!!!!

by Dave BW on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:18 pm

  89. Why can’t we beat this little team?

I’m still numb from yesterday. And now this.

Yesterday they violently yank a molar from my skull, without as much as a courtesy dose of Novocain, and today they’re drilling in the empty socket.

by T Smith on Jul 11, 2008 at 10:21 pm

  90. Billfer, I owe you a beer. My daughter and I were planning to have dinner at the Park however she ran late (as usual, she’s 14!!) so we went right over to the game.
And what a lackluster game it was. I was just so disengaged. Even the strikeouts, I just didn’t care. Like T Smith I think I am still numb from yesterday.
I think I’m going to take the weekend off…..

by cib on Jul 11, 2008 at 11:18 pm

  91. Central
    standings W/L GB
    CHI…………26-12…—
    MN…………26-14….1
    KC………….13-16….8.5
    DET………..13-23…12
    CLE………..13-24…12.5

by Vince in MN on Jul 11, 2008 at 11:19 pm

  92. T Smith, Ouch. That description made me wince. They make 6 outs on 12 pitches in the middle of the game. It’s just a matter of time before someone throws a 60 pitch complete game against them.

by ron on Jul 12, 2008 at 2:59 am

  93. Yup. A day later and I still don’t feel yesterday’s loss. This one didn’t really bother me much either, though, I left the house after the Tigers cut it to 3-2 as I had plans.

by Mike R on Jul 12, 2008 at 3:54 am

  94. I might’ve missed that sequence ron, but I’m guessing that they were swinging often and early because (1) the Twins throw strikes like no other and (2) Perkins threw 56 of his 86 pitches for strikes which is 65%. It feels like that if they swing early and often and don’t produce hits it’s “being impatient” and then when they do take some pitches and get down in a hole and ground out it’s “being dumb for not swinging at the meatball 1st pitch.”

by Mike R on Jul 12, 2008 at 3:58 am

  95. In 1 run games the Twins are better than the Tigers. The Tigers need to beat the Twins down by 10+ runs for a few games here. Lets go to All Star break on a high note.

by Chief Monday on Jul 12, 2008 at 5:23 am

  96. I’m finally ready to stop supporting Sheff. He needs to be moved into a off the bench roll, like how Thames was used earlier this season. Sheff got his 2nd chance, he’s going to have to earn another.

Time to give Inge a 2nd chance now. I hope we give him a chance to play Inge at 3rd base the rest of the year. Just platoon Guillen/Cabrera at 1B/DH.

by Chief Monday on Jul 12, 2008 at 5:32 am

  97. Check out Lynn Henning’s aticle – great satire:
