Game 92: Tigers at Twins

PREGAME: Those of you who believe in momentum may have had your beliefs shaken after yesterday’s gut-wrencher. Armando Galarraga faces the one team that he seems to struggle the most with, the Twins. He’s managed to last 6 innings in each of his starts, but his 10:8 K:BB ratio in 18 innings isn’t all that inspiring.

Glenn Perkins takes the mound for the Twins. Perkins has stymied the Tigers twice already this season and has given up no more than 3 runs in any of his last 6 starts.

And I’m going to this game so there will most definitely be a rain delay.

  1. No trend is forever, I think the Tigers take a close, low scoring game tonight. The bullpen will redeem itself, if only for one day.

  2. Leyland said shortstop Edgar Renteria, who strained his left hamstring running to first base in Wednesday’s game, should be available to play Friday night. …wonderful news .There is a win right there…in fact why play?
Santiago did more in one game than Renteria did in a month

  3. billfer, I hereby buy you a beer. Go ahead and buy it yourself and send me the receipt. I will gladly repay you.

have a blast tonight everyone, I won’t be able to catch the game with you. Go Tig’s!

  4. Aren’t beers like 10 bucks a large glass at Comerica? I would def go broke there, cause beer & baseball just seem to go together

  5. since Mark in Chicago is feeling generous.. let’s put the beer on his tab tonight..lol

  6. lets see 6 innings of not much yesterday and 6 innings of not much today…..this is exciting

  7. This is unbelievable. Why is Galarraga still in this game? For that matter, why was he allowed to stay in after the leadoff walk? Leyland & Co. didn’t even have anybody up with Battelstar near 100 pitches to start the 6th and two quick innings in a row by Tigers batters.

And now we’re losing, because Nick Punto is apparently Joe Dimaggio. They can’t get him out, and when they do, he still drives in a run.

  8. This pitching change is about 4 batters too late. No fault of Armando’s, this one’s on Jimmuh.

  9. unfortunately that one run might be enough seeing that the Tigers are in their 0-1-run mode we have seen often this year.

  10. How do we make this guy (Perkins) look so good every outing? Unbelievable.

  11. I am sticking to my prediction that the Tigers will win this game. So far I have the low-scoring part right, and Armando pitched well (which is against the trend). Now we just need to rough up Perkins for 2-3 runs…

  12. Rod acts like they don’t want to pitch to Sheff. I would rather pitch to him than Joyce.

  13. funny how careful everyone is with Sheff and he hasn’t done squat in almost a full year…from last aug

  14. Brian you have to admit Sheff has hit some impressive ground balls to the mound this year, Especially when he just throws his bat at that outside pith

  15. Tigers have to come back. Rangers are already beating the sox 5-0 in the third, and still batting.

  16. how come when the Twinks get a runner on third /less two outs they hit those fly balls and score the run…I didn’t eve think that was legal in Comerica Park

  17. I told you pitch to Sheff, not Joyce. Too bad the Twins were smart last inning.

  18. Some of us just got carried away researching that “beer” topic at the start of the game and are having trouble operating heavy machinery such as keyboards and related gear.

  19. Thought Kevin was gonna have to put on his rally jersey..but looks like they’re doin alright..so far *fingers crossed*

  20. Coleman

Screw the beer. I had 1 Boddington, and now I’m on the Cruzan and diet. This team drives me to drinking.

  21. Forty

Gomez is so fast. That is the only reason, I think, it was caught. I thought it was gone off the bat.

If someone is on base it has to be Larrish. Have you seen his average with runners on base. It would also be funny to see a rookie pinch hit for “the sheff”.

  23. There’s nothing wrong with taking a walk rather than swinging at ball 4 and ball 5 (Miggy) or swinging at other pitches out of the zone (Thames). They both were trying to hit a game-tying home run. If they get a pitch to drive, fine. if the pitcher is not throwing strikes, take the damned walk.

  24. its even nauseating watching sheff hit because you have such a high expectation that he will do something and yet you know when he is done he didn’t do anything and you knew that would happen,,,,strange

  25. Rod gave us a pearl of wisdom…He says Rodney needs to throw the ball closer to the plate….thanks Rod

  26. Sheff is just at the annoying stage right now. He doesn’t do anything at all to warrant getting AB’s right now. I would rather see Joyce, Thomas, or Larrish.

  27. well at least they didn’t piss this game away like yesterday ..they just got beat by a better team. This Twin team is solid and plays as a team,,,unlike the .500 Tigers…. The Tigs might catch the Sox but i don’t see them catching the Twinkies

  28. The Tigers swing at pitches because they might be called strikes. The Twins wait and swing at pitches they think they can drive. In so doing, even when they don’t get many hits, they run up the opposing pitcher’s pitch count. And of course they get a lot of extra baserunners from the walks.

  29. judpma

That is why this team hovers around .500. Fundamentals aren’t as good. Twins score 2 runs with a sac fly. Tigers did have one tonight, but it seems like every time the Twins get a chance to score at least 1 run they do.

  30. This team is flat brutal. Nice offense against a marginal LH pitcher when they can stack the entire lineup with righties. Need to cancel my XInnings cause this team stinks. Sorry, I am usually an optimist but this is just ugly. The good news is I get to watch it in person next weekend.

  31. Oh well. I’m done for the night. I like Verlander on Sunday. He has been pitching great lately. Tomorrow on FOX is a little scary. Gotta get some runs tomorrow.

  32. ya …they do take advantage of what they get…sac..bunt…the have some speed and their bullpen is usually very reliable…they will be tough to catch …I am sticking with my prediction back in April of 81 and 81 if the Tigers can get there….
Tigers are way to inconsistent and they never bother to do the little things,,,lots of wins lately BUT how many losses where the starting pitcher has done a great job…way too many

  33. Why can’t we beat this little team?

I’m still numb from yesterday. And now this.

Yesterday they violently yank a molar from my skull, without as much as a courtesy dose of Novocain, and today they’re drilling in the empty socket.

  34. Billfer, I owe you a beer. My daughter and I were planning to have dinner at the Park however she ran late (as usual, she’s 14!!) so we went right over to the game.
And what a lackluster game it was. I was just so disengaged. Even the strikeouts, I just didn’t care. Like T Smith I think I am still numb from yesterday.
I think I’m going to take the weekend off…..

  35. Central
    standings W/L GB
    CHI…………26-12…—
    MN…………26-14….1
    KC………….13-16….8.5
    DET………..13-23…12
    CLE………..13-24…12.5

  36. T Smith, Ouch. That description made me wince. They make 6 outs on 12 pitches in the middle of the game. It’s just a matter of time before someone throws a 60 pitch complete game against them.

  37. Yup. A day later and I still don’t feel yesterday’s loss. This one didn’t really bother me much either, though, I left the house after the Tigers cut it to 3-2 as I had plans.

  38. I might’ve missed that sequence ron, but I’m guessing that they were swinging often and early because (1) the Twins throw strikes like no other and (2) Perkins threw 56 of his 86 pitches for strikes which is 65%. It feels like that if they swing early and often and don’t produce hits it’s “being impatient” and then when they do take some pitches and get down in a hole and ground out it’s “being dumb for not swinging at the meatball 1st pitch.”

  39. In 1 run games the Twins are better than the Tigers. The Tigers need to beat the Twins down by 10+ runs for a few games here. Lets go to All Star break on a high note.

  40. I’m finally ready to stop supporting Sheff. He needs to be moved into a off the bench roll, like how Thames was used earlier this season. Sheff got his 2nd chance, he’s going to have to earn another.

Time to give Inge a 2nd chance now. I hope we give him a chance to play Inge at 3rd base the rest of the year. Just platoon Guillen/Cabrera at 1B/DH.
