Nice interview again (I tried to listen at work, but the Webcast would not work on my computer). I too have concerns about Verlander, as the thought of whether or not he has some sort of injury crossed my mind last night.

Pitching (both starters and bullpen) has concerned me so far this season. But, I am glad to see that the hitting is improving over the last week (despite last night’s loss).

I still think that Grilli has value to this club as a mop-up guy. I know he goes thru stretches where he is terrible (mostly at home), but he also goes thru stretches where he does a pretty good job (such as wednesday in Cleveland). And the thing about the Cheeze-man is that he is a reliever who can pitch up to five or four inning per apperence. And you certianly don’t want to burn-up your best middle relievers, such as Seay or Bautista, on long middle relief or in blowouts.

As far as Miner, I think he is passing the point of being highly unreliable as a middle reliever– even as a mop up man. Since he can’t get anybody out, he is throwing three innings of pitches in one inning and givng the Tigers no chance to come back. And there is no way you would want to get Miner to pitch in games where the Tigers have a comfortable lead (imagine Miner pitching Wednesday’s final 2.2 innings, and the Indians getting back into the game).

I think the thing for DD to do is to send Miner to Toledo and get him conditioned for a starter’s role. I do think he has value as an emergency spot starter in case of injury. but for the most part, Miner has to get off this roster as a reliever.

To me it’s only Miner and Grilli who put my stomach in knots when they get the call.

Seay has only allowed baserunners in one appearance. That appearance was pretty bad, but in every other time he has been called in he has set them down in order. That sounds pretty good to me.

Yeah Ryan – Miner’s performance so far has been stupefying. He’s better than this. Seay has also been mildly disappointing. I imagine Miner’s time in Detroit may be short lived since he’s still got an option left if I’m not mistaken. A 15+ ERA should probably make him Toledo-bound.

Nice interview Bill! Let’s hope Verlander gets it figured out soon.

Anybody have an idea what Zach Miner’s problem is? Not that we expected him to be lights out, but he’s been flat out terrible so far. Grilli gets tons of flack on this site (and deservedly so, for the most part), but Miner has actually been worse this year. Seriously, across the board in every stat he’s been worse (or at least no better) than Grilli. Last night, Verlander left with the score 5-1. Not great, but not a lost cause either. After one inning of Miner, it’s 10-1. Is he channeling his inner-Jose Mesa, or what?

I’m starting to think that if we’re not going to trade for bullpen help, it’s time to start a revolving door from Toledo and see who can answer the call. Gallaraga did his part. Aqualino Lopez has been solid. Beltran – not so much. I’m not sure what we have to gain by sticking with guys who give up runs in almost every appearance – or what we have to lose, by giving someone else a shot.
