  1. Re: Leyland’s goal for the starters

If 3 starters make 2 extra outs per start over the course of 35 starts a season it adds up to almost 70 innings for an entire season. That is a pretty good workload for a relief pitcher. So essentially Leyland is looking for those 3 starters to be both 3 starters and 1 relief pitcher.

  2. Lots to like in those, thanks billfer.

I will say that while I like Zumaya’s determination and i’m glad he’s trying to get back as soon as he’s medically ready, I hope he doesn’t hold a grudge against Tiger fans due to the speculation after the injury. This is a guy with a history of some…shall we say “self-control”…issues (guitar hero incident, obviously) so some _initial_ skepticism on the part of fans isn’t totally out of line. That said, we love the guy for what he brings, and he has a monster (and rabid) fan base among tiger fans. It’d be a shame if he doesn’t trust those people any more, as I think a lot of us fans see him at the back end of our pen for as many years as he wants to stay. Get healthy soon, Zoom, we need you.

Oh, and there is no bad to more of the Grandyblog this year. He represents everything that’s good about baseball, the Tigers, and professional athletes in general. Couldn’t be happier that we’ve got him locked up for a while now, and couldn’t be happier that he’s going to blog again. He’s one of the guys that really “gets it”.

  3. That bit from Sheffield’s doctor is kind of scary, saying he wasn’t sure how Sheff even swung a bat at all last year. If Sheff manages to be healthy this year, it could be just as important as the addition of Cabrera.

    Fingers crossed…

  4. I hope that Bonderman especially can go deeper into games. I love watching him out there being a horse in the 8th inning.

How many complete games did the Tigers throw last year? The no-hitter, but that’s all I can think of. A few of those would be nice, and would save the bullpen.

  5. The Twins have signed Livian Hernandez for $5 million. These are the kind of deals that make no sense to me at all – picking up an overpriced, washed-up veteran doesn’t seem to be the best way to rebuild.

  6. Maybin, Miller and Jurrjens aren’t the only former Tigers on that list…right before Raburnat #46 is some guys named Scott Moore, who apparently is still only 24!

  7. I know this is a Tigers blog obviously, but if just love good baseball stories and want to read a good article check this one out. On ESPN’s MLB page check out the story on Tony Gwynn Jr and Trevor Hoffman, a lot of interesting background I had no idea about.

Its one of the fews times I read something non Tigers related, and just thought it was really good.

    Now, back to the Tigs!

  8. Nice catch Tony! I saw him on the list, but forgot to mention it. That trade ended up being Scott Moore for a half season of Kyle Farnsworth + Zach Miner.

  9. joey, that is an awesome read. thanks for posting.

on another note, i can’t believe the wait for spring training is basically over. what a long interesting winter. play ball.

  10. Yeah, I know Scott Moore has a lot of promise, but what does it say about a guy who has now been traded for Kyle Farnsworth and Steve Trachsel? Also, don’t forget that we got Roman Colon, too!
