More Boras posturing

Jon Paul Morosi has been all over the place this fall. The Free Press had him in Arizona for the AFL and he is now covering the General Manager meetings in Orlando. He has the scoop that Kenny Rogers has decided to come back, but Scott Boras says that Rogers is testing the market.

This appears to all be posturing on Boras’ part in an attempt to up Rogers price. The fact that Maddux and Schilling have already signed probably works in the Tigers favor in that their is a cap set for what is reasonable. If I had to guess, and this is complete speculation on my part, it will be a 1 year $7.5 million deal with incentives that if he makes 20 starts it goes to somewhere in the $8.5 range and if he makes 30 starts it approaches $10 million.

Boras: Rogers will explore his options

  1. I’d still love to be an intern or assistant and work with Scott Boras for at least a year. Yes, we know he’s greedy and aggressive but he has tremendous business savy. Perhaps that is why Ilitch and Boras seem to be able to get deals done.

  2. I think Boras postures in his sleep. That said, if I was a ballplayer, I wouldn’t mind having him on my side. Think of him as the Bill Laimbeer of sports agents. (Well, I guess he calls himself a “representative.” Because “agent” is so… common… you know?)

  3. Do we really think signing Kenny Rogers is a good idea? He’s 43, spent a lot of last year hurt, and had sub-50 games scores in seven of his last nine games. The guy’s not freakin’ Methuselah, for cry eye.

  4. Yeah I would think signing Rogers is needed. His presence on the bench first of all to all the young guys is imperative. I would love him to come back after retirement to be an assistant pitching coach. Secondly look at all the older people that play softball. Shilling, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Lofton. Maddux just got his 17th gold glove….unbelievable. So yeah I think the tigers should get him back considering he would pretty much be our only veteran starting pitcher which helps out with youth. My how ye have already forgot about the 2006 playoffs where he didnt allow a run.

  6. Sign him. Sign him. Sign him.

Does Boras act like a turd from time to time? Yes, but he gets a ton of money for his clients which means he is good at his job.

  7. Off-topic, sorry, but this brad lidge for michael bourn deal: bourn’s going to houston to play CF, they have carlos lee in LF and moving hunter pence to RF – Luke Scott is the odd-man-out here. He’s 29, bat’s left, can play LF or RF, is cheap (arb eliegible I think after 08) and has a 273/366/516 line in 663 big league at bats – would look very nice in an old english D. The astros should be looking to move him pretty cheap since they no longer have room for him. Looks like a perfect fit to me, if we could swing a deal. Thoughts?

  8. Also, don’t hate boras, he just does what his clients want him to do and he does it better than anyone else. If my son played pro-ball, I’d sure as hell want boras to represent him.

  9. I think the Roger Clemens Experiment could turn out to be the beginning of a new trend: signing old pitchers for limited use. I won’t be surprised if Curt Schilling is treated very tenderly by the Red Sox — usage kept under 150 innings, either by skipping his turn occasionally, or even holding him out for a few weeks in midseason with a phantom injury (ankle tweak, stiff back, tender spot on the arm, you know). Hence saving him for the stretch run and playoffs.

The Tigers could have the same thing in mind with Rogers. Glavine and Maddux may be in for the same kind of treatment as well. If a team has enough resources (and enough rotation options), they can make good use of a veteran who’s effective in a limited role but no longer able to handle 200+ innings a year.

  10. Thanks for the link, Mark. Interesting that DD was looking to replace monroe even back in december 06. A Scott-Monroe or Scott-Thames actually would have been quite a tasty platoon in 07, no? A thames-timo platoon in 08, however, will make me vomit in my own mouth.

  11. I’d be all for dealing with the Astros. Considering they were just robbed of Brad Lidge who, granted, isn’t living up to his 2 outstanding seasons but still was very effective at over a K per inning, and a .218 BAA against. At this point, i think a change of scenery is good for him.

And Ed Wade is putting his magic touch. Nothing like having the worst farm system in baseball and then hiring Ed Wade to try to rebuild your team. We could get Luke Scott for 20 cents on the dollar.

  12. I don’t think you’re giving Wade enough credit for that trade. Lidge would have been a free agent next year, and the Astros seemed to get three pretty good players in return.

  13. Eh. Possible.

And regarding Boras: I don’t get why he gets the hate. Shouldn’t the players get more flack because they employ him. He works for them. He represents what they want. So doesn’t that make them the money grubbing bad guys?
