Very nice! You're correct in that I'm not accounting for *any* part of the ball intersecting with the zone. In effect I'm looking as far out as a pitch centered on the border but should probably move it out an additional 1.45 inches as you did.

Hit by pitches are not included in the pitchf/x data today and I did not filter out bunt attempts but certainly should have.

Thanks

Jeff, point certainly taken, but the numbers, even without any sort of information about the count, seem to me to indicate that these two are poor bad ball hiters, not that they swing at too many bad balls. The count certainly affects any specific conclusions, but I feel safe in screaming "Way to miss that, Inge" instead of "Way to swing at that Inge" at the TV from now on.

Ya gotta be careful, Ryan. The numbers need to be broken down by pitch count in order to make conclusions. It could be that they recognize pitches properly when they have an even or favorable count, yet flail desperately when backed against a wall.

Interesting... these numbers seem to indicate that Granderson's and Inge's high strikeout numbers aren't the result of swinging at too many balls, but rather not being able to hit/foul off the balls they do swing at at a league average rate; the problem isn't pitch recognition, it's the ability to reroute a swing in the middle and just get a piece instead of missing the pitch entirely.

Before the dizzying highs and gut-freezing lows of the coming two weeks, I would like to thank you, Billfer, for the great stuff you put up on this site week after week after week. I consider myself a fairly knowledgeable fan, but there is some real horizon-expanding stuff I've seen on here. If the Tigers were to create some sort of publicly elected stat-geek position, you'd have my vote.

11-4 for the playoffs. Go Tigers!
