I’m a little concerned about the advice Durham is giving Shelton. Shelton seems like the kind of guy who needs to work counts to get good pitches. Maybe Durham thinks Shelton is overcompensating and letting too many good pitches go by so he ends up swinging at bad ones, but Durham’s general tone is somewhat disconcerting.

Shelton’s performance down the stretch is a real key for the Tigers going forward. If he can be a .290/25 HR hitter at the major league level for a few years, that could be a tremendous asset at a position that’s currently a weakness offensively.

Up to today, Leon Durham was the least likely major leaguer serving as a hitting instructor. Then the Mets hired Rickey Henderson. Leon is now silver medalist.

yeah, kyle, it sounds like he’s working to make shelton more of a free-swinger, and that particular job is already filled on the Tigers… by guys with tenure, no less

I’m not certain Shelton can be a .290 major league hitter. When he’s locked in he’s great. But when he’s not, he’s Craig Monroe. I know, I know, he hit .299 in 2005. Yeah, after collapsing down the stretch that year, too, to the tune of: .247/.320/.456 in August and September combined.
