I noticed that 19 walk stat. That doesn’t surprise me at all. That’s why we got Shef. He can work counts, and he doesn’t strike out that much.

Ben is correct-to ‘step in the bucket’ is to step away from the plate with the front foot and open up the body to the pitcher.
Is there a more under-rated pitcher in baseball than Nate Robertson?

Props to Rodney too for a good outing (in spite of a walk). I’ve been critical of him before, but it seems he may be getting it together now.

And speaking of mid-week day games, attendance today was around 29,000. Not too shabby, especially when you consider school isn’t out yet. How many of those were playing hooky today, do you think?

Thanks all. “Step in the bucket” is an expression I’ve never heard before.

And hey, not a bad sweep at all. Even though the Sheff gets on base/Maggs gets an RBI thing didn’t hold true today, I’m still loving that 2-3-4 stretch of our lineup. And loving that 4-4 performance by Sheff too.

He was talking about Ordonez I believe, and it is stepping away from the direction of the mound. Ordonez has a pretty non-text book swing in that he does step in the bucket.

I think Ben is correct on this one. As I remember it, the story I heard about Al Simmons (a HOF outfielder for the Connie Mack-era As) was that it was remarkable he had such a great career, because he constantly stepped “in the bucket,” or away from the plate, as he swung. They even nicknamed him “Bucketfoot Al” because of it.
