Tigers sign De La Cruz, Vazquez, and others

The Tigers today signed righthanded pitchers Eulogio De La Cruz, Preston Larrison and Virgil Vazquez, lefthanded pitcher Edward Campusano and catcher Mike Rabelo.

Detroit now has 26 members of the 40 man roster under contract for 2007

  1. Man I hope this doesn’t sound stupid. LOL.

But what’s going on with Percival? He’s gone to the Angels as a pitching instructor right? How’s this open the money situation with theTigers? Is that where the salaries for the new pitchers/catcher came from? I know nothing about how salary abitration works so an insights are appreciated.

  2. The guys listed were all on the 40-man roster already, so their (relatively to the league) meager salaries would have been budgeted by the team already. Therefore, this isn’t really extra money they had to pull in from somewhere as the money these guys receive would have cost the Tigers about the same regardless of which minor leaguers were filling those roster spots. Also, players like this aren’t affected by arbitration until they have three years of time on the active roster. I’m a little squishy on how certain I am of that last point, but I think that’s right.

As for Percival, he’s off the Tigers’ books but the money that freed up was probably absorbed in the deals already signed or hopefully soon to be signed (Guillen). Of course, the Tigers may have received insurance money while Percival was hurt, so it may not have freed up much money in the first place.
