Roster Finalized

The Tigers turned in their finalized roster to MLB with one final addition. Virgil Vasquez, who pitched 28 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the AFL, had his contract purchased today. The streak is particularly impressive given the hitter friendly nature of the league.

The roster is set at 39 which means the team will be able to participate in the Rule 5 draft at the upcoming winter meetings. If they choose to participate I’d guess they would be looking for a lefty reliever. Of course if are going that route, they could have just added one of their own lefty relievers, Cory Hamman.

The Tigers, and other team, will have an extra year to not protect players thanks to changes in the new CBA. Previously players younger than 19 had to be added to the roster within 4 years of being signed and those older than 19 had a 3 year window. A year was added to both those time frames.

Here is the roster:
Pitchers
Jeremy Bonderman
Roman Colon
Eulogio De La Cruz
Chad Durbin
Jason Grilli
Todd Jones
Preston Larrison
Wilfredo Ledezma
Mike Maroth
Andrew Miller
Zach Miner
Nate Robertson
Fernando Rodney
Kenny Rogers
Kyle Sleeth
Jordan Tata
Virgil Vasquez
Justin Verlander
Joel Zumaya
Catchers
Mike Rabelo
Ivan Rodriguez
Vance Wilson
Infielders
Sean Casey
Tony Giarratano
Carlos Guillen
Omar Infante
Brandon Inge
Kody Kirkland
Neifi Perez
Placido Polanco
Ramon Santiago
Chris Shelton
Outfielders
Brent Clevlen
Alexis Gomez
Curtis Granderson
Craig Monroe
Magglio Ordonez
Gary Sheffield
Marcus Thames

Overall I like the roster, but having both Neifi Perez and Ramon Santiago is a little disappointing. Seeing as Chris Shelton and Marcus Thames will probably be on the outside looking in for the 25 man roster the bench looks to be pretty weak offensively.

  1. We need to get Thames to a team that’s gonna use him. I’m feeling more and more frustrated for the guy.

  2. Joey C. I agree. Not only should he be playing full time, but he should be somewhere that won’t rob him of 15 HR over a full season. Do you suppose Atlanta would take Thames and Casey for Adam LaRoche?

  3. Is “coach jim” a catchy way to name oneself, or are we to suppose that Jim Leyland is posting to this blog?
