Game 156: Tigers at Royals

PREGAME: So maybe it’s just as well the Tigers didn’t clinch a playoff spot last night. They’d have wanted to party, and there would have been this pesky day game to play today. Hopefully they can take care of business today, have a boisterous flight home, and relax with an off day tomorrow.

It will be Justin Verlander against Runelvys Hernandez.

In terms of implications, the Tigers are 1 1/2 games up on the Twins and the Twins have a game in hand. If the Twins win out, the best they could do is 99 wins. The Tigers are at 93 wins so their magic number is 7. However, the Tigers hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Twins, so the real magic number is 6. As for the playoffs, a Tiger win or White Sox loss locks up a playoff spot. When it comes to home field, the Tigers are now only a half game behind the Yankees, so that is still very much a possibility.

Game Time 2:10pm

POSTGAME: Not a lot for me to say about this one. Let’s just be happy.

Oh yeah – and the Tigers once again have gained the best record in all of baseball.

  1. This raises an obvious quesiton…are the Royals really this bad, or are the Tigers raising the bar a little?

  2. Greg, I say he goes 6 innings at the most, and maybe he’ll even be out after 5… There is no way Leyland will keep him in more than 6 innings.

  3. Good question T, its probably both. The tigers are infact way better with something to play for.
The Royals are at the end of a miserable season. I really do feel for them, they will not be good for a while.

Good chance here to get Verlander a win and get him out early. Let these guys have fun tonight and come home and run the table.

    Steve

  4. The guys need to take it easy from here on out and save the tattered remnants of KC’s pen for the 4-game set against the Twins.

    Go Orioles!

  5. Looks like Baltimore is trying to come back on Minnesota, but now they’re in a delay. Go Birds! Ya know what’s even sweeter? 3 more games against the Royals.

  6. And in the more good news department, the Yankees are down big. If things hold up Detroit reclaims the best record in the AL

  7. So the O’s/Twinkies game is in a rain delay after 6 full innings…somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t six in the books qualify for a full game if they call this one on rain?

Gotta love the Devil Rays beating up on the Yankees. Got the wild card in the bag, now let’s shoot for the divsion/best record/homefield advantage throughout!

  8. I would also be in favor of getting Ozzie and the others out. Dont need an injury, that and a day off they get a little more healthy to go win the Division.

Billfer, Just wondering would we have that Monday off of work if we won the division?
