Flipping for home

Today MLB conducted a bunch of coin tosses to determine who would have homefield advantage in the event a one game playoff would be necessary to determine a wild card or divisional winner. All the results
are here.

But if you’re interested in how the Tigers fared, if they tie the White Sox for the AL Central, they’d play in Chicago. If the Tigers tie the Twins, they’d play in Comerica which is good because the Metrodome is evil.

Interestingly enough, the only flip conducted for the AL Wildcard was Minnesota and Chicago.

(Thanks to Jim for the tip)

  1. Each team would play one game against the other two teams. If all 3 teams go 1-1 they do it again. The games would count as regular-season games just like the New York-Boston playoff of 1978.

  2. At some point one team will go 2-0, one team will go 1-1, and one team will go 0-2.

It gets ugly if they were also tied for the wildcard with Boston or California (I refuse to call the Angels “Los Angeles”). In that case, the East or West team would wait for the final results of the Central Division, then play a single game against the team that went 1-1.

  3. I don’t know if anyone was watching twins v. a’s today (9-13-06), but in the top of the 3rd Liriano came up injured after a pitch in the dirt. The trainer immediately ran to the mound and Liriano was dragging his pitching arm as he walked back to the dugout.

  4. Huh. During the great DY-Thames debate that occured just before DY was released, some of us wondered what the people at Baseball Prospecus thought about DY taking Thames’ at bats. After the fact, at least, they seem to think DY deserved those at bats.

Moot point now. And I’m of the belief that Thames won’t turn out to be a significant downgrade from what DY was doing against right-handed pitchers (just as I thought that DY wasn’t a downgrade compared to what Thames had been doing before DY returned).

An extra bat would have been great, but I tend to think BP is overreacting.

  5. Notwithstanding my partisan sentiments,it would be a shame if Liriano’s injury is as serious as it looks.Garza looked good for the Twins in relief of Liriano and Harden was masterful for the A’s.The White Sox are kicking as-er,butt-in Anaheim/Los Angeles/California/the OC on WGN right now.

  6. “the Metrodome is evil.”

2010 can’t come soon enough. That MLB could call that oversize gym a legitimate venue for its major league product for even one year (never mind almost thirty) is a freakin’ travesty.

An NFL coach once called it a rollerdome.

  7. Agreed, Bobber. Statistical evidence:

    Twins’ home record: 50-24 (.676)
    Twins’ away record: 35-36 (.493)

This difference can’t all be explained by eating good home cooking when they’re in Minneapolis.

I also note that the Tigers are one of only a few MLB teams with a better road record than home record. At some point, they need to start building a team better suited to Comerica. Faster outfielders, in particular.
