About Pudge’s last at-bat, doesn’t that “dropped third strike” only count when first base is empty?

There was a man on first, but the rule only applies with less than two outs.

From Wikipedia.com

Notice that if, at the time of the pitch, first base was occupied with fewer than 2 outs, the batter is out anyway. This is to prevent the defense from deliberately dropping the 3rd strike and getting a double or triple play as a result, because of "force" situation kicking in (as the batter becomes a runner).

I couldn't find it in the official rules, but I trust this explanation.

Hey Jeff and Joey C.,

About Pudge's last at-bat, doesn't that "dropped third strike" only count when first base is empty? I thought for sure Granderson or perhaps Inge was on first when Pudge struck out.

On other news, I remember Leyland expressing nervousness about DY taking over on 1B...now we know why.

Well, as much as I don't like DY, there were a total of 2 un-earned runs last night, and we lost by 4 runs. The errors didn't decide the game.

Let's not hang our hopes of Maroth coming back to solidfy the pitching staff. Take a look at his WHIP -- he was allowing a lot of baserunners but was getting out of jams. Be wary of him returning to form of prior years, especially coming of the DL.

It seems like for the last year or so, DY doesn't perform unless he is under threat of trouble. His contract is assured? There goes his game... Trade deadline safely past? There goes his game... The question is: is it his attitude (no threat? time to kick back and be sloppy!), or just his personality (can only perform under pressure any more)...? I totally want to be WRONG about this, but it is the impression I've had for a while.

Young...Wasn't he having legal troubles before? And alcohol troubles? That's all I'm saying. But. I take Shelton over DY today. Or Casey, even with the pulled oblique.

Dimitri Young makes Shelton look like Keith Hernandez.I hope that seemingly cursed 8th inning yesterday didn't damage the psyche of the team-it reminded me of a Wings playoff game several years ago when they seemed to have the Avalanche on the ropes and the series in the bag and some bad goals turned things around.I know there's alot of season left but one bad week could make the Central uncomfortably close.

This may be a case of looking past a weak opponent. Not that this is an excuse, but they lost one they shouldnt have yesterday and did not have anything going today. Lets ee what Jim does overnight / Tuesday to get them going again.

I agree with all the posts. Kenny needs a couple of weeks to rest teh arm and get ready for the strech.

Good to see all the opinions on the trades. I think we all just need to stand bye and see what happens. Csey could come back rockin' just because its new and the Tigers are smokin right now. A little refresh blood and few hits could go a long way. While I really want to hope Shelton will come back and be a big league hitter, he needs to get it together quick. As my co worker said he could hit water if he fell out of a boat right now. It really is a bummer because he had the story book year all lined up.

Later Tiger fans..........

Yeah, crap. Wanted to start of my Tuesday in Tokyo with a win.

By the way, looks like we raised the Twins' level of play for their Texas series. In fact, it seems a lot of teams play better after losing to the Tigers...

this was the sorriest performance by the Tigers in a long time. What, 12 K's? Against basically a AAA pitcher in Fossum, et al? And Dmitri didn't make 3 errors, he made 4. He missed (yes, missed) Rogers pickoff throw - that wasn't Rogers' error. How does a major leaguer make 4 errors in one game? Maybe we should've sent Dmitri down and kept Shelton. This game reminded me of the Tigers of yore....just bad. The only bright spot was Clevlin's throw out at 2nd in the 8th inning. There's gonna be hell to pay if they don't play well tomorrow night - I'll be there. Now let's just forget this very forgetable game..... :-(

Terrible game.

When does Maroth get back?

Chris, I agree with you about the magnitude of the problem re: The Gambler. I also agree that Leyland isn't likely to pull him from the rotation.

Greg, I'm putting the call into some heavy hitting east Brooklyn dudes who will be happy to manufacture an ailment.

....uh...just kidding...there's nothing happening here...everything is normal.

We certainly didn't deserve to win that, but I'm not happy about Pudge's reaction on that last pitch. You could see by his body language that he thought "hey, maybe i should run to first" several times, but each time he decided "ah, fark it. the game's over."

9999 times out of 10000 times he's right, but c'mon... that's the kind of attitude that I would expect from Juan Gonzalez.

Just an awesome at bat by Inge in the 9th. Stupendous.

Well we can debate the Casey/Shelton fielding difference, but I think we can all agree that Casey is going to be an upgrade from DY. What an awful performance.
