While the organization has pitching depth, it's positional players are nothing to write home about (as Tim mentioned just look at Erie). I think they are looking to stockpile some guys that might not have a huge upside, but could move into the higher levels within 2 years. There are some significant departures from the past. They took all college players in the higher rounds, and mostly college players who have excelled performance wise. Borquin wasn't in the BA top 200 but he was Big Ten MVP. The kid from Kentucky is a giant guy with a big swing, again not in the top 200 but he was SEC MVP. They took guys who performed rather than "tools" guys. Boesch would be the exception: has all the talent in the world, great body, but didn't play up to exceptions (ala Jeff Larish). Sizemore is a scuffler, not a great IF but hits with pop. Newton is very rough as a catcher but can hit. And they intend to leave him at catcher which they have not done in the past (Munson, Fick, Shelton). The pitchers from Oregon St and CS Fullerton: neither highly regarded by scouts but both have performed very well. This contrasts with picks of the past like Jay Sborz, Colin Mahoney, etc. Another thing is that almost all the hitters will take a walk. I don't know if Chadd is a Moneyball guy or not; maybe the mix they got was due to a poor talent pool. But they really did go for people who have performed well despite modest expectations. I'm guessing Borquin is going to turn out to be a steal. I hope he gets a shot at W Michigan at least, if not Lakeland. They also signed the U of M catcher Jeff Kunkel right before the draft. He's a Jason Kendall type; good bat, good eye, limited power, good catch and throw skills. Overall I am very pleased. They got the best player in a weak draft in Miller, they should be able to sign him, and they got some lumber for a farm system that is short on it.
