I don't watch NASCAR at all and I'm not even sure what prompted your posted, but I don't think attendance is an accurate measure of the fan base. There's a limit to how many people you can cram around a field/track. NASCAR has a few dozen races per year. NFL has around 300 games per year. MLB has over 2500 games per year. There's no way that gross attendance can be a fair comparison. I think you would also need to consider attendance per event and tv/radio ratings per event in order to make a reasonable judgement on popularity. My guess is that football wins.

Living in Florida, I'm bombarded with NASCAR fans. They all say they have the facts, they all say they have the source, they all say that NASCAR is the #1 sport in the USA.

I'm not sure where this all comes from. It's nice that they have a sport where all 50 or so teams compete at the same event at the same time and have them all on the same channel at once. Sure, I'm willing to admit that you can have more fans at one event, watching one event at the same time. There really is no comparison. Just don't tell me that NASCAR has more viewers and sells more tickets than any other sporting event in the USA. I've done the research, here are the facts.

Attendance for last complete season of each sport:

#1. Major League Baseball - 76 Million

#2. National Basketball League - 21.5 Million

#3. National Hockey League - 21 Million

#4. National Football League - 16.5 Million

#5. NASCAR - 5.5 Million

#6. Major League Soccer - 3 Million

That's right, NASCAR had less than 6 million in attendance last season, just slightly beating Major League Soccer.

Clearly, Major League Baseball is still our national pasttime, regardless of what anyone else says. Ticket sales speak for themselves. The next time someone mentions NASCAR, I will be prepared, and now you will be prepared too.

Go Tigers!
