According to an article on the Tigers official site, Leyland is also resting Zumaya, not wanting to wear him out either.

According to Baseball Prospectus, Verlander still is 18th overall in terms of individual stress. He is far and away the leader on the Tigers in terms of pitching abuse, which isn't a good thing for a young promising arm. His ranking has been falling steadily for the last few weeks though. I think it's about time for me to give credit where it's due and admit that Leyland certainly hasn't been the terrible pitcher abuser that I strongly predicted he would be. Keep up the good work, Jim!

So I must commend Jim Leyland

I'll second that. He hasn't lived up to his reputation on that topic.

Great post Bilfer. Leyland has been an excellent leader for the Tigers this year. As you point out, the pen is a huge part of this (Rodney looked a bit shaky his last two appearances. Could be law of averages catching up to him, but getting Hanfner and Martinez was big).

What has been exciting to see is the continuing development of Maroth and Robertson under Leyland and how they are responding to his system.

I see my Red Sox on top of that list and shudder thinking of day night doubleheaders in August......
