For the kind of money garciappara would command there is no possible way i can see him being a positive pickup. His injury track record is terrible and we are in no position to offer another player with massive injury problems a contract. We've already got guillen and maggs who have missed more than their fair share of time the last two years... there is no reason to take another risk.

I want him. We need someone who can get on base. His line-drive hitting would be great in Comerica.

I know the injuries are a big concern but I think he's a bargain right now. A better gamble than Ordonez for sure. It looks to be a moot point; he's likely coming out here to LA.

What could possibly be the downfall of signing Garciaparra? Say he is a total bust for the Tigers and NEVER plays again. So what? A two year contract would mean he would be off the books in two years max. I know it's chic to rip on Nomar but he played very well at the end of the season. I know 15 years of losing has messed with people's minds in Detroit but are people really saying that the Tigers shouldn's sign Nomar if given the chance? Look at all the teams that are interested in Nomar. The Yankees, Bosox, Indians, and Astros are all after him. Those ballclubs have one thing in common and NOTHING in common with the Tigers. They are good. I just don't see how any Tiger fan could be against signing Nomar. Luke, I appreciate your viewpoint but you say the Tigers don't need to take another risk. Take another risk with what? What's the risk? The Tigers stink now. They always have stunk. So, if they sign Nomar and stink with Nomar, there is no risk. They're just in the same position they were in before. There is no salary cap in baseball. The best teams (bosox, yankees, etc.) go after the best players. The Yankees have been burned countless times by free agent busts but they keep going after them. The Tigers won't win unless they spend money. They don't have to spend Yankee or Boston type money but they have to do what it takes to put together the best roster possible within reason. Pudge and Mags were long term contracts. That's a different monster. A two year contract for Nomar would be a no risk proposition. Like I mentioned above, the worst case is he has no impact for the Tigers for two years and the Tigers stink in the process. That's no different than what we've seen for 15 years. Look at it this way, you can either have the current Tigers roster for 2006 or the current Tigers roster plus Nomar for 2006. Which would you take? It just seems like a no-brainer. Illitch has money to spend. He's admitted as much. Don't buy into the belief that paying Nomar $8 million a year for two years would some how break the bank.

Anyhow, I apologize for writing so much but the Tigers needed to upgrade the roster above and beyond the pitching. They need production from the third base spot among other things. The Tigers could either play Nomar at third or move Carlos Guillen over to 3b (like the Tigers have discussed for quite some time now) and play Nomar at ss. This is a moot point since the Tigers won't sign Nomar. But if he showed interest, they would be crazy to turn him down.

I am still hoping that DD will find a little more urgency after Illitch's last statements and get another starter. I think that with a decent starter, and hopefully significant improvement via the new hitting coach from either Inge, Infante, Logan that the offense will become more consistent. I think that an in shape, disciplined Young could take over at third and allow for inge to be a super sub. I would be more comfortable with another established starter and letting Colon, Zumaya, and Verlander compete for a sixth spot in the rotation.

I think Garciaparra would be a good signing if it was only two years. Putting him at 3B and letting Inge be the supersub would help the Tigers. However, since more attractive teams are interested in him, it would probably cost the Tigers more than two years to get him and that would not be a good idea.

He's signing with LA for 1 year $6 mil guaranteed. Surprised he couldn't do better. He's from SoCal, maybe he wanted to be here.

he's not worth that kind of money, especially if we're paying it without knowing how good he will be at whatever position we would be moving him to.

Nomah being a moot point... well, yay. I don't know, I want to be able to say that Pena still has something to offer (I think he showed flashes of it near the end of last season when he really bore down), but his inconsistency is starting to frustrate even me.

Hope everything's alright, Billfer.
