[...] Assuming the details of Maroth’s contract are accurate, I like the deal for both sides. Maroth gets two years guaranteed, and the Tigers get some cost certainty in an ever escalating market for pitchers. The contract will be up in 2008 when the Tigers will have considerable payroll flexibility. If Maroth is still part of the mix, they could then try to ink him to another multi-year deal buying out his last year of arbitration and first year(s) of free agency. Plus, $2.5 million per year for 200 innings of league average pitching isn’t a bad deal. [...]

I appreciate the quick research. You've confirmed my suspicions. I guess what I like about the current situation is that we're rebuilding without fielding a joke of a team. We're not going to seriously contend in '06 or '07 (barring something very unexpected) and Illitch certainly won't be putting anything into the savings account, but we should have a decent team to cheer for and I love our position for '08 and on.

It is indeed valuable to look long term when analyzing new contracts...

But it's sure hard too look a the Tigers and say,"oh we're gonna be real good in 2008. I've been looking three or four or five years ahead with this club since I was 13 years old. I turned 30 this past fall! How much consolation can I take from the potential promise of 2008?

I definitely understand the fatigue, Joey, but I'm inclined to believe that things really are different this time. It's possible that a rash of elbow injuries could set us back 5 years, but I think it's very fair to say that our system is in a better position from top to bottom than it has been in 15 years.

I agree with Jeff M, IMO, this is the best the Tigers organization, from top to bottom, has looked in a long time.

The complete buffoonery that managed our minors is gone and, unfortunately, it will take a long time to build it back up. While not thrilled with the two signings at least we haven't crippled the future with a longterm heavy $$$ contract.

Now, everyone has to go into the season with realistic expectations, competitive yet another year or two away, frustrating yet on the right track.

Nice article. Makes you think we might have a real shot by developing talent and adding payroll by 2008. At this point, I'll take that.
