Three position players and a reliever? I'm not sure anyone saw that coming.

Maybin sounds a lot like Drew Henson; he carved out a big rep while playing mediocre teams and not seeing quality pitching, especially off-speed. Zach Putnam would have been an infinitely better pick, despite the potential signing problems.

The Tigers took Putnam in the 38th so the signing problems must be severe.

Jim, that is why you trust the scouts. Scouts were not impressed with Putnam this spring, at least not enought to make him a first or second rounder. He wanted 1.5 million according to the rumors and the scouts saw him as a 3-5 round prospect, which is a slot that does not get that much money.

On the other hand Maybin slipped to the Tigers due to the college player love and the fact that there was a false rumor (according to his father it is false) that Maybin would want a huge signing bonus. Maybin was considered to be the 3rd best overall player in the draft. He has the skills and the work ethic. Its not all about competition it is more about makeup and overall talent. He had a huge summer with Midland, which is a traveling team that plays some of the top talent around the country. Maybin is the type of talent that goes first overall in most drafts.

Ask the Brewers if they are worried about Weeks lower competition during his college career at Southern. Either way I think it was a very good pick for the Tigers. He has a HUGE ceiling. It is extremely hard to find a good hitter is as athletic as Maybin. He could fail but I think he has a decent chance at doing very well.
