I think the main disappointment is that the Tigers didn’t get Pavano. I know we all wanted them to sign a big name, high caliber pitcher to lead the rotation. When that didn’t happen, I myself turned to Beltre. Disappointing at best. 5/65 seems reasonable for Beltre. I would have gone 7/105 if I were the Tigers (as a max limit).
I dont know – while Beltre seems to be oozing potential again after last season, I still see a guy who put up three below-average seasons in a row prior to the breakout, with terrible strike zone judgement and stagnated skills. Does 2004 erase all that?
I dont know what the future holds for Mr. Beltre, but I would rather someone else pay $13M to find out. If it means the Tigers missed out on a “big name”, I can live with that. No need to get hosed from simple impatience.
