  1. Billfer, there are so many things wrong with article I don’t know where to start. Do you think the Tigers might have a say in allowing another MLB team into Detroit? Tiger Stadium is by all accounts falling apart even more rapidly since the Tigers left. I seriously doubt the Expos could make it there financially. And I’m sure there will be thousands of Montrealers coming into Detroit to see their old favorites. Please. The Expos need an owner who can make a go of it in Montreal or one who can build a stadium and move them into a market capable of supporting them: Washington DC, So Cal (could easily support a 3rd team), New York (ditto), Portland, Las Vegas, etc. The fact that there aren’t people lining up to buy suggests that the owner’s plea that they are losing money has some actual basis in fact.

  2. Tim, I know that there is no way this will fly. I did find the article interesting and humorous at the same time. Aside from repeated misstatement of facts the business plan that figures on the ability for the city to support two teams is ridiculous. Illitch won’t even let a minor league team into

Tiger stadium, let alone a major league one.

  3. Screw Ilitch. The old stadium is falling apart due to neglect by the Tigers (the city is paying the tigers nearly half a million dollars per year to “maintain” the stadium). Repairs could be made. The sad truth is that the Tigers shouldn’t have moved to begin with. Ilitch has shown to be largely out of touch with the fans. Giving him the bennefit of the doubt, lets say that a new stadium was an absolute necessity. Why not build something new and modern that reflects the design and charm of Tiger Stadium? When I go to Comerica Park (a rare pilgrimage), I look around at the sterile atmosphere and wonder why they didn’t try to make a new version of one of the most beloved historic ballparks. Luckily for the Red Sox fans, the new ownership in Boston seems to understand the fans desire to hold on to Fenway, as renovations continue to be made to make it a viable arena for years to come. I don’t understand why Ilitch has so much say in what the city does anyhow. The fact that he blocked a minor leage team coming in speaks more to the sad state of the Tigers over the years than it does to the ability of Detroit area fans to support the local teams. Note that since the Tigers have been playing better ball, fan support has started to return and crowds have increaced. Detroit and Michigan in general will support winning teams.
