Felipe Alou, 66, would have been a short-term solution for a team in need of a long-term answer. Pujols will have a better chance of becoming that answer if Alou becomes his bench coach. If Pujols proves inadequate, Dombrowski can always conduct a more expansive search in the offseason, when highly regarded bench coaches like Ken Macha (A’s) and Joel Skinner (Indians) would be available.
